4 years ago I fell into the worst state of derealization imaginable. I never thought I’d feel normal again. I genuinely felt like the only person in the world who felt this way. I lost all emotions. Couldn’t feel the world around me. Didn’t even recognize myself in the mirror. Just this emptiness and isolation I never want to experience again. At my lowest, I made a promise with God - if you ever let me feel normal and real again, I’d never take a day for granted. From there, I dedicated everything to overcoming DPDR. I lived in a dissociative state (derealization) for years when my OCD was loud. I felt disconnected from the world around me, like my surroundings were not sharp and I was a step removed from them. . It was scary but ultimately it was my brain’s way of trying to protect me from 24/7 distress. It was trying to protect me by detaching from the painful emotions and relentless intrusive thoughts and images. . Rumination and mental compulsions can also contribute to dissociative states. . While it can be you brain’s way of trying to protect you from extreme distress, derealization can scare people and cause even more distress. For those with existential obsessions, derealization might feel like “proof” that the world is not real and they are really living in a dream. . The key is to not fight with the derealization, just as we do not fight with anxiety and panic. Mindfulness skills can help us notice the derealization without judgment and without resistance. . While it is scary, derealization (like anxiety or panic) is not dangerous. . I’ve talked about this a few times on my YouTube channel, but for the last four years I have been living with a condition that I now have come to know as DPDR or depersonalization and derealization, which can be caused by many things but is an anxiety-based condition. I recently discovered the DP manual online and since listening to about 3/4 of it I feel I have to share this information with whoever needs it. I never would want to gate-keep this even though I am not recovered in case it could help somebody else, and I believe it could. The information in this manual is unbelievably helpful so far and gives me hope for the first time that I will fully recover. This is NOT sponsored or paid for, the website is called dpmanual dot com and the YouTube channel is called Depersonalization Manual. There are TONS of recovery stories on there and so much helpful free information. This is NOT a replacement for doctors, medication, therapy etc. this is an adjunct treatment (I’m in therapy and on meds) as he states in the beginning of his manual. A lot of doctors (I have found) don’t know what it is or don’t specialize in treating it, so this can really REALLY help. We will recover! #Dpdr #depersonalization #derealization

It’s one of the scariest symptoms of anxiety because you might feel like you are not yourself and losing the control. I had this for years and here are my 5 Quick Tips to Calm DPDR: 1️⃣ Press your feet into the ground and feel the floor. 2️⃣ Focus on a sound, or smell - get aware. 3️⃣ Breathe quietly: Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 6. 4️⃣ Clench your fists under the table, then release. 5️⃣ Silently remind yourself: “This is temporary.  ✨Depersonalization can feel like you’re viewing yourself from outside your body, as if you’re watching yourself in a film, you can feel detached from your thoughts and feelings. ✨Derealization is a feeling that the world around you is not real, like you’re in a dream. Things seem distorted, foggy, or like you’re in a daze. ✨DPDR is linked with many mental health conditions: anxiety, trauma, depression, stress/burnout, substances, and sensory overload. Here are 5 things that can help: 1️⃣ Use your senses to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. Look around and name five things you see, touch four things, smell three things, taste two things, and focus on one thing you can hear. 2️⃣ Find an object you can hold in your hand that has an interesting texture, temperature, weight, or another distinctive feature. Pay close attention to this object, describe it to yourself, and notice the physical sensations it creates when you hold it. 3️⃣ Splash cold water on your face or hold ice cubes. 
4️⃣ Practice slow deep breathing to help activate your body’s relaxation response. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four, hold for a few counts, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a longer count of six. Repeat this up to 5 times. 5️⃣ Play a familiar song that you like and sing along to it; this can help refocus your thoughts and ground you back in the moment. 6️⃣ Remind yourself that DPDR is a temporary state and you’ve gotten through it before and it will pass again. Use calming affirmations like “this feeling will pass,” “I can cope with this,” or “I’m safe.” If your DPDR is caused by anxiety, then see my book 📚 Ten Times Calmer for a comprehensive guide on overcoming anxiety problems.
