MAIndigenous Peoples don’t owe us settler’s performances.
What we witness today;
the drumming, the dancing, the vendors, the laughter…isn’t for settler “entertainment”.
It’s ceremony.
It’s memory.
It’s medicine.
It’s survival, despite everything colonialism tried to destroy.
Today is not just a celebration.
It’s a call to reckon.
A call to listen.
A call to do better.
If you live on this land like I do, you benefit from systems built on stolen land and broken treaties.
Solidarity can’t be symbolic—it must be daily, relational, and rooted in action.
Here’s where we can start:
Learn the Nations and treaties where you live.
Support Indigenous-led businesses, creators, and mutual aid funds.
Read Indigenous authors and unlearn colonial narratives.
Examine your own privilege, defensiveness, and responsibility.
Support land defenders and Indigenous sovereignty…in real, material ways.
Let today be one step.
But not the whole walk.

THEveryone’s explaining WHY Europe colonized the world geography, resource scarcity, military innovation. @jonaskilker made a great video on it. But those are the mechanics.
Nobody’s asking the harder question:
What did they CHOOSE to do with that power?
Because having the strongest army doesn’t mean you have to enslave people. Having better ships doesn’t mean you have to erase cultures. Having advanced guns doesn’t mean you have to strip a country of $45 trillion (that’s 17x Britain’s entire GDP today).
Other civilizations had the tools.
India produced carbon steel 2,000 years before Europe understood why it worked.
Persia controlled 44% of the world’s population; and freed slaves instead of making them.
The Chola Navy dominated the Indian Ocean — and the people they conquered still claim descent from them with pride.
Ashoka ruled nearly all of India, saw the horror of war firsthand, and carved his guilt into stone for future generations to learn from.
But is this unique to Europe? No. Genghis Khan leveled civilizations. Certain Abrahamic groups erased indigenous beliefs wherever they spread. China enforced ethnic homogeneity for centuries. Cruelty and conquest aren’t European inventions.
But Europe industrialized it. They didn’t just conquer, they built legal systems, religious doctrines, and corporate structures (look up East India Company and the Doctrine of Discovery) specifically designed to make extraction permanent and dehumanization official.
Europeans were inherently worse. Their environment may have bred a certain ruthlessness out of necessity. But at some point, survival became greed. Innovation became domination.
And the absence of an ethical framework meant there was nothing telling them to stop.
History doesn’t just ask who won. It asks what you did with your victory. Don’t let anyone “winnerwash” the past by telling you that the strongest were the best. More often than not, they won because they REFUSED to play by ANY rules at all.
The real flex isn’t conquering the world. It’s having the power to — and choosing not to.
