RADhurandhar - Reel! De La Rue - Real!!
The movie Dhurandhar shows a dramatic scene about India’s currency printing secrets being leaked. While the scene is cinematic, it is inspired by real events.
In the 2000s, a British company called De La Rue, one of the world’s largest currency printers, supplied currency paper and security threads to India.
In 2010, Indian intelligence reportedly found that certain security features were compromised, leading to a surge in high-quality fake currency (“super notes”) that were extremely difficult to detect — even by ATMs.
Following this, India blacklisted De La Rue. However, concerns remained that sensitive currency-related technology may have been exposed.
Many analysts later linked these issues to broader economic security concerns, and some believe this was one of the hidden factors behind India’s 2016 demonetisation move.
Today, India has shifted towards “Make in India” currency production, strengthening security and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.

FUIn a recent podcast, a well-known political thinker and administrator sparked massive debate by claiming that when the current government eventually leaves power, the next government will jail members of the previous regime for demonetisation (note bandi). He called note bandi the biggest financial scam of independent India, arguing that it was sold to the public as a fight against black money but ended up punishing ordinary citizens instead—daily wage workers, small traders, farmers, and the informal economy—while those with power and privilege remained untouched. According to him, the sudden withdrawal of currency collapsed businesses, destroyed livelihoods, caused irreversible economic damage, and yet failed to achieve its core objectives. He stressed that history does not forget policy disasters disguised as nationalism, and that accountability delayed is not accountability denied. Whether one agrees or disagrees, such statements force an uncomfortable but necessary conversation: Was note bandi an economic masterstroke, or a reckless experiment with people’s lives? The truth, he suggests, will eventually surface—because governance without responsibility always returns as justice.

SIFake notes were never the real problem.
Dhurandhar 2 shows this clearly.
Fake notes and demonetisation were real issues.
But how big was the problem actually?
According to RBI data, fake currency was only a tiny fraction of total cash in circulation.
And after demonetisation, almost all the money came back into the system.
So was fake money really the main issue?
Here’s where it gets more complex.
In India, power is not just about money.
People like Atiq Ahmed were not just gangsters.
They were part of a larger system of crime, money and politics.
Demonetisation disrupted that system.
Cash flow stopped.
Networks were shaken.
But did the system disappear?
No.
Fake notes reduced for a while.
Then they came back.
Because the system doesn’t end.
It adapts.
The game stays the same.
Only the methods change.
So the real question is
Was demonetisation a solution
or just a temporary shock?
