Compensation ranges from ₹12 lakh to over ₹2.5 cr a year.
Sounds great, right?
But here’s the catch - most companies pay ₹50–60 lakh, while only a few big tech, telecom, and pharma firms cross ₹1 crore.
And how it's paid?
This includes annual fees and sitting fees,
₹20,000 to ₹1 lakh per meeting.
But there’s no standard structure across companies.
What's the core problem?
As experts point out, what value an independent director brings, and how they’re paid, is not market-determined.
Same role.
Same risk.
But Very different rewards.
Why talent is hesitating?
With high accountability and uneven compensation, many professionals are thinking twice before joining boards, especially in complex businesses.
