Horton Hears a Who! (2008) — Directors Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino went to great lengths to ensure the 3D computer animation stayed completely true to the quirky, asymmetrical aesthetic of Dr. Seuss’s original 1954 pen-and-ink book illustrations. To achieve this, the technical team developed custom rigging software specifically designed to prevent the characters from moving with realistic human anatomy. Instead, the software forced the 3D models to squash, stretch, and bend in physically impossible ways, perfectly mimicking the floppy, weightless physics of the classic cartoon drawings.
Additionally, despite their characters sharing an incredibly deep and emotional connection throughout the entire narrative, lead voice actors Jim Carrey (Horton) and Steve Carell (The Mayor of Whoville) never actually recorded their dialogue together in the same room. They spent months in completely separate recording booths across the country, relying entirely on the directors to piece their emotional comedic timing together perfectly in post-production.
