Reef care 🪸🙏 This coral reef is an example of a non healthy reef. Predators like parrotfish and triton’s trumpet shell are gone due to overfishing. The species crown of thorns starfish (COTS) and algae are left behind to thrive. COTS do belong on a coral reef to feed on fast-growing coral and leave space for slow-growing ones 🪸 On a healthy reef their numbers are controlled naturally. If a reef is overfished the opposite happens and their numbers explode. In this case COTS can devaste hard coral communities big time 😔 The most efficient way of dealing with this problem is to inject COTS with vinegar. Once they get the liquid in their system they will die on the reef and get eaten by fish and crustaceans 👏 But the ocean needs your help in this! 👋 I highly recommend you to take part in COTS programs! It needs to be repeated several times and it’s a fun way to spend time with likeminded scuba divers.
