THn 1923, when Edwin Hubble proved that the faint spiral known as Andromeda was a separate galaxy far beyond our own, humanity realized that the universe was vastly larger than previously imagined.
It meant our home was just one part of something much greater.
The galaxy we live in, the Milky Way, spans about one hundred thousand light-years and contains hundreds of billions of stars. From within it, we see only a thin band of light across the night sky, yet that band is a colossal structure rotating slowly through space.
And beyond our galaxy lies an even greater scale.
The observable universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies, each as immense as the Milky Way, scattered across distances so vast that light takes billions of years to travel between them. What we call the universe is not a single system, but a vast collection of cosmic cities spread across space and time.
