MASome kids have teachers who say,
“They had a great day.”
And parents who think,
“Then why did everything fall apart the moment we got home?”
I used to wonder the same thing.
What I didn’t realise then
was how much effort my daughter was spending just to hold it together.
Following instructions.
Filtering noise.
Meeting expectations.
Pushing through a body that was already tired.
Some children borrow tomorrow’s capacity
just to survive today.
And when they finally reach the place where their nervous system feels safe...
everything they’ve been holding in spills out.
The tears.
The overwhelm.
The crash.
Not because they’re difficult.
Because they’re depleted.
That’s when I stopped asking
“How do I stop the meltdown?”
And started asking
“What has her system been carrying all day?”
