REOver the last decade (2014–2024), India’s education landscape has changed drastically. Government schools fell by 8%, with 89,441 closures nationwide, while private schools increased by 14.9%. This shift is most pronounced in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, raising concerns about equal access to education.
India is moving from public to private education at an unprecedented pace. Between 2014-15 and 2023-24, 89,441 government schools shut down, while private institutions grew by nearly 15%, reshaping the future of learning.

Math proficiency scores dropped again among the state’s 8th-grade students, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), aka the Nation’s Report Card, released late last month.
The federal test scores - released every two years - for math and reading proficiency among the nation’s 4th and 8th-grade student - is down among Washington students at the 8th grade level and is part of a downward trend over the last ten years.
“In Washington state, our 8th-grade math scores are continuing to sink and sink faster than they are in the average state in the United States.”
The trend exists despite state and federal education spending continuing to trend up, says Marguerite Roza, director of Edunomics Lab at McCourt School of Public Policy, Georgetown University.
