A new argument has broken out between Republicans and Democrats over old text messages deemed to be threatening or offensive. During an election debate, Jay Jones, Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, apologized for texts he sent three years ago in which he suggested then-Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert, a Republican, be shot and killed. Separately, Politico reported this week on a trove of “racist, antisemitic and violent” messages allegedly exchanged by leaders of the Young Republicans. The group subsequently condemned the messages, but Vice President JD Vance then weighed in, dismissing the controversy as “pearl clutching”.

Independent MEP candidate @jamesrydercomedy voiced concern about political apathy among Maltese youths after an election debate at the University of Malta attracted a low turnout of students. Ryder, a comedian-turned-politician, was one of eight MEP candidates who took part in today’s debate at Sir Temi Zammit Hall, that was organised by Lovin Malta, MaltaToday and KSU. He spoke out after PL MEP candidate Daniel Attard dismissed concerns that youths aren’t interested in politics by arguing that half the panel was composed of young candidates, that he was elected Mtarfa mayor when he was only 20 years old, and that a number of youths had turned up to watch the debate. However, Ryder pointed out that there were rows of empty seats, even though lectures had been suspended for the duration of the debate to encourage students to attend. “Perhaps more people were interested but ended up leaving because of a certain person’s schedule,” he said, a reference to how the debate started late because PL candidates had to attend Robert Abela’s press conference this morning. “But where are the youths? They had an opportunity to hear us but they’re not here. If apathy may not be visible in political surveys, it’s certainly visible in the rows of empty seats.”

This is utterly shameful from @itv. 😡 They failed to provide live British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation for their election debate on Tuesday; now they’ve failed to offer a signed version within 24 hours like they promised. How is this in any way acceptable? Deaf people are playing catch-up in this election, and that’s unjustifiable. This is completely damning of ITV.
