SKAs part of our MYP 3 Service as Action project, we put into practice what we learned from our unit, “Is it true that you are what you read,” which focuses on how newspapers, journalism, and media shape public awareness and behavior. Just as journalists use their platforms to inform and educate the public, our goal was to teach the youngest students in our school about “Stranger Danger,” ensuring they understood how to stay safe in emergency situations.
We drew from the same principles that guide journalism: clear, concise messaging that leaves a lasting impression. We emphasized the importance of not approaching strangers or accepting anything from them—no matter how appealing, such as candies or chocolates. To make this lesson more engaging and relatable, we conducted a role-play where one of us acted as a “kidnapper” offering chocolates. Observing the children’s reactions, we saw that while a few initially accepted, the majority were cautious. Once they saw the consequences of those who took the chocolates being “taken away” in the game, their awareness increased, making them much more mindful of potential dangers.
In line with how journalism uses visuals to communicate effectively, we created charts that illustrated the dos and don’ts of stranger danger. These charts acted like infographics, simplifying important concepts such as emergency numbers, helpful hand gestures, and the importance of staying in familiar areas or with trusted people. Our goal was to ensure the children remembered these safety tips in a way that would guide their behavior, much like how a well-crafted news article can influence how readers approach an issue.
