The CCC got access to 200 million 2 factor SMS. Is two factor authentication using SMS doomed? A service like WhatsApp, for example, uses third parties to send these 2 factor SMS, and one of these services, called Identify Mobile, was insecure and security researchers from the Chaos Computer Club, also called CCC, got access to over 200 million of these SMS. That's quite a large number. And it is well known in security circles that authentication using 2 factor SMS is insecure because there were a lot of other attacks in the past, like SIM swapping, and this may be the final straw to ditch SMS authentication and switch to TOTP codes or even better, FIDO2 hardware tokens. #2fa #attacks #FIDO2 #TOTP
