It's basically the core of everything that's wrong with Utah politics because we can't elect good leaders to pass good policies if the maps are rigged. Here's what happened: Enough voters in SD15 withdrew their signatures to push the repeal effort below the threshold, keeping it off the ballot. That's a huge win. But it's not the end. They've tried this before. They'll try again, likely with a constitutional amendment to give themselves more power. So celebrate this moment, then stay engaged. Voting rights are the foundation of a functioning democracy. Right now in Utah, paid signature gatherers backed by millions of dollars have turned in enough signatures to try to repeal Proposition 4, the voter-approved standards meant to prevent extreme gerrymandering. Across the state, there have been many reports of problematic signature gathering practices, including voters saying they were misled about what they were signing and reports of names appearing from people who say they never signed, including individuals who were out of state or out of the country during the entire signature gathering period. Even if you never signed anything, check your name. Go to burrn.org and use their tool to search for your name. If your name appears and you did not sign, fill out the signature removal form and send it to your county clerk as soon as possible. Check for yourself. Check for your family. Check for your friends. In Utah, local mayors have more ‘immediate control’ over your life than the President—yet 70% of us skipped the last local election. It’s time to flip the script. Utah is a “gold standard” for voting access because every active registered voter receives a ballot in the mail. Despite this, 7 out of 10 voters who cast a ballot for the President in 2024 chose to sit out the local elections in 2025. 1. The “Off-Year” Effect Utah holds municipal elections in odd-numbered years (like 2023 and 2025). This separates them from the “noise” of national politics, but it also means there isn’t a “big name” at the top of the ticket to draw people to the polls. As the post you shared mentions, this often leaves the decisions to the most “ideologically driven” minority. 2. Radical Differences in Participation In some Utah cities, like Provo, turnout has historically hovered as low as 9% to 11%. In those cases, a local official might be elected by only a few thousand people in a city of over 100,000. 3. The Power of “Ballot Propositions” Interestingly, Utahns do show up for local issues if they are specific. In 2018, turnout for a non-presidential year jumped to 57% because of high-profile ballot initiatives (like medical cannabis and Medicaid expansion). While many Republicans have undermined the security of elections in Utah and across the country, our Lieutenant Governor has consistently stood up against the politics and advocated for trustworthy outcomes, and for that she's been threatened with impeachment. HB 529 was an attempt to remove her from the picture in the "Utah Way," by hiding the ball and saying this is about policy not personality. Replacing a trusted official who is shielded from the politics with another partisan politician to oversee our elections is a bad idea and I'm glad I was able to stop this bill in its tracks.

The House Government Operations Committee on Tuesday approved both HB529, which would establish the position of the secretary of state, and HJR25, a constitutional amendment that would give voters the final say on the matter later this year.
