What makes it feel “meh”: ❌ Power-of-convenience: abilities appear when the plot needs them. ❌ Lore lectures: pages of origins instead of on-page consequences. ❌ No price tag: casting is free, so nothing matters. ❌ Feature bloat: ten systems, zero story jobs. ❌ Solutions without setup: the reader can’t see how it works, so they don’t feel the win. How to make your magic burn the brightest (my take + @brandsanderson Three Laws of Magic): 🔥 Law 1: Your ability to solve problems with magic in a satisfying way is directly proportional to how well the reader understands said magic. 🔥 Law 2: Flaws and limitations are more interesting then powers 🔥 Law 3: Before adding something new to your magic (setting), see if you can instead expand what you have. I absolutely agree with all three of Sanderson’s laws, and if you want to learn more about them i highly advise you to check out his free lectures on YouTube! Now on my tips, world & character glue: 🔥 Let culture, economy, and religion dictate your rules: prices rise, black markets form, guilds hoard. 🔥 Tie magic to identity: a virtue it corrodes, a flaw it amplifies, a relationship it endangers. 🔥 Give every ability a story job: obstacle, resource, timer, or moral test. Quick template to check your system: 🔥 Source: where it comes from. 🔥 Scope: what it can affect. 🔥 Cost: what it consumes. 🔥 Limits: when/why it can fail. 🔥 Tells: sensory cues so readers feel it. 🔥 Consequences: personal + social fallout.
