That doesn’t make you confused or weak. It makes you human. For a long time, I thought loving the family unit meant I had to keep going at any cost. Like wanting out meant I was giving up on something sacred. On the life I’d imagined. On the version of “us” I worked so hard to hold together. What people don’t always see is that sometimes the hardest part isn’t leaving the relationship. It’s grieving the family you wanted it to be. The moments that were good. The hope that kept you trying. The sense of togetherness you were protecting, even when you felt lonely inside it. That conflict is exhausting. Loving something while slowly realising it’s costing you parts of yourself. Staying because of the family, while quietly wondering who you’re becoming in the process. I don’t think this is something you decide overnight. I don’t think it’s as simple as loving someone or not. For a lot of people, it’s about whether you can stay without disappearing. Whether the version of family you’re holding onto is actually sustainable for you. I’ll never judge anyone who stays. Or leaves. Or stays longer than they thought they would. Or leaves and goes back. Eva fell in my lap almost 4 years ago during one of the worst times of my life only to leave me during the best. My only justification is that my angel on earth completed her mission. I will never be the same person I was 5 days ago. This type of loss is nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Eva was supposed to help me process the future loss of my oldest, never did I think for a second my oldest would be helping me process the loss of her. My big girl had the most expressive human like eyes that only ever showed us unconditional love.
