And we’re still learning and getting burned. If you’re new to RV life, get used to it. This is typical, regardless of brand. The belly-blanket sags under the water weight. The puddle gets bigger. We just bought this 2026 Solitude days earlier. How does this happen? This is how. The gray water pipe from the front bathroom to the tank was left short and unconnected at the factory. The dealership said, “I have one tech and no idea how long it will take, but bring it in.” The hell I will. We’re supposed to be on the road. My mobile RV tech came on a Saturday. He quickly found and fixed the manufacturing defect. We left for Christmas in Alabama a few hours later. But wait, there’s more. The bottom of the shower frame wasn’t sealed when installed at the factory. The Norcold no-frost fridge is freezing up. You can see the ice on the back wall and freezer ceiling. And the dryer vent is about to fall off. I’m madder than a hornet in an empty Mountain Dew can. But I’m totally not shocked. I just paid well north of $100k for a new RV. Payload is how much weight your truck can safely carry in the cab and bed combined. That includes pin or tongue weight, the driver, passengers, fuel, your hitch, tools, and anything else riding in the truck while you tow. It adds up faster than most people expect. Here is where things get misleading. Let’s say your truck has 1,900 lbs of payload and your fifth wheel has a 1,700 lb pin weight. On paper, that works. But once you add two adults, a couple kids, a full tank of fuel, and a hitch in the bed, you are suddenly over payload without realizing it. That is when suspensions squat, steering feels light, braking distances increase, and tires wear prematurely. Tow rating does not override payload. Payload is often the true limiting factor, especially with fifth wheels. It is just one of several numbers that matter when buying an RV, but it is one of the most misunderstood. Yes.. you — There she goes! What a funny experience to see it, but in all honesty we never got very attached to her as we only lived in it for a month. Yes.. you read that correctly. We sold our fifth wheel after one month 🤦🏽‍♀️ is that because we realized we hated this lifestyle and couldn’t wait to get back to our house? NO. The opposite actually. After one month on the road, Alex and I realized we were loving every second of traveling. But the fifth wheel we purchased had some issues.. It was a great deal off of FB and we were in a crunch for time because our house was getting booked with Airbnb guests staying Jan 1st, so although it wasn’t our dream layout.. we liked it enough to see if it worked and could be our trial run of this lifestyle. But after the first month, we realized it wasn’t sustainable for our family.. stay tuned and I’ll be sharing a reel explaining that in more depth. On top of knowing the layout wasn’t working.. It had an issue that I never.. EVER could have predicted. It was infested with.. lady bugs 😩🐞 I’m not talking about couple here and there.. we would spend hours each day vacuuming up hundreds of them. They were everywhere. I’d spend the kids entire naptime each day cleaning them. It was just gross and according to a professional was going to cost a pretty penny to get rid of them (I’ll post a reel about that too 😅) So all that to say, we loved the experience but this ol girl was not our forever home. We found someone who was willing to combat the army of bugs and loved the layout. So we gave them a great deal and off she went! The most exciting part about this is now that we know we want to do this for a while, Alex feels confident in towing, and we figured out our needs. So.. we bought a new trailer!! 😁🎉 and picking it up this weekend. (On our birthday of all days, yay!) We’ve been humbled and learned so much over our first 4 weeks lol.
