5 REASONS FIREFIGHTERS ARE STRUGGLING IN THE FIRE SERVICE 1. Handout mentality vs earning your keep Nothing is owed to you in this job. Respect is earned through effort, consistency, and how you show up every shift. 2. They stop preparing after year one Preparation isn’t a phase. It’s a career-long commitment. The moment you coast, you fall behind. 3. They make it about themselves This job isn’t about you. It’s about your crew and your community. Selfless firefighters are the ones people trust. 4. Weak mindset under pressure Your mindset will either carry you or break you. Stay positive, stay focused, and take ownership of everything. 5. They forget the foundation: being a good person Before you’re a firefighter, you’re a human being. Integrity, humility, and character matter more than anything.

After 13 years in the fire service, these are some valuable hard lessons. 1️⃣ You are replaceable at work - but not at home. The department will move on without you, but to your family, friends, and loved ones — you’re everything. 2️⃣ The department isn’t designed to take care of you. That’s your job. Set boundaries, protect your health, and look after yourself first — then you can take care of others. 3️⃣ Few understand the weight firefighters carry. The emotional, physical, and mental load is heavy - that’s why prioritizing your health isn’t selfish, it’s survival. 4️⃣ Be cautious with overtime. I’ve worked plenty, but those extra shifts will never replace the moments you miss with your kids and family. Those are the memories that matter most. 5️⃣ Sleep matters more than we want to admit. Coffee and energy drinks can get you through the day, but they’re not a fix. Without real rest, your patience runs thin, your performance drops, and burnout isn’t far behind. Prioritize sleep on your off days — your body and mind need it. Follow @NextLevelDadFitness if you’re ready to stop sacrificing yourself and start building a life that works with you, not against you.

What a time it has been. It’s been tough, my perspective on life has shifted, and I am more driven now for a whole new reason. I remember around week 16 of this pregnancy we had a department training that everyone was at, it’s always a blast; we train long, late, hard, and I am no stranger to putting myself right in the middle of every evolution. But this year, my body was different. I couldn’t do it like I did. I got on a handline once, pushed like I usually did and fell. I caught myself and all was good, no belly bumps, no injuries. But I realized then that things were going to look different for awhile. I stepped away from everyone and just cried. I felt like a baby but looking back, I was beginning to grieve a part of me that I knew I wouldn’t get to see for awhile. Though, I know in my heart I’ll train to get back, that road will be tough. Then I realized in a moment of a pity party, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t change a single thing. I was so ready and willing to do it to meet my child If I’ve learned anything this pregnancy, it’s how much I really do love what I do and I also can love my son. Here are a few things I learned during this time.. it’s not easy to continue to show up all the way through pregnancy people in my department care about the non firefighter Dria Policy isn’t everything, but it does help Pregnancy is hard and though staying active and healthy helped, it did not make me exempt from feeling it There is no person who can ever tell me I don’t belong in the fire service as a woman. I created a whole human, am going to bring him into this world, raise him, and do my job exceptionally This job will be here when I’m ready. There is no fire, no extravagant call, no part of this job that will ever be worth risking myself or my child for during a pregnancy. At no point was I functioning at 100% so I wasn’t going to pretend like I could When I became a liability, I came off the line. No one should be making up for what I can’t do, even in pregnancy I fought internal wars for the past 40 weeks and what I thought would break me and weaken me, did the exact opposite. I am so excited to meet my little guy 💙

Let’s give ‘em a show 💥‼️💪 The Florida RIT Operations Group had an exciting opportunity to attend the 3rd Annual Florida Fire Service Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, February 18. Our RIT showcase included teams from Palm Beach Gardens @rit_dawgs and Walton County @wcfrfl working through the course in front of a crowd of several hundred people throughout the day, including state lawmakers and fire service leaders. This was an unbelievable platform of visibility for our competition- and the importance of what we train for- all taking place on center stage within the State Capitol grounds. Great work to the teams and judges involved! 🤘 #rapidintervention #firefightertraining #firefighterfitness

Your reputation in the fire service isn’t built by talking about it, it’s built by showing up prepared. Put in the work, stay disciplined, and maintain a level of fitness that lets others trust you when things get hard. When the tones drop, your crew should know you’ve done the work long before the call ever came in. Hard work and high standards build the kind of reputation that can’t be faked. #LeatherheadStrong #FirstResponderFitness #EarnYourStrength #FunctionalFitnessForAll #StrengthWithPurpose

Five-story tower climbs for continuous 45 min is a classic fire service conditioning drill — and “Lungs, Legs & Grip” is a perfect way to frame it, especially at the Connecticut Fire Academy. The stair climbs evolutions with tools and work tasks between floors is designed to build the three foundational attributes firefighters rely on most: 🔥 Lungs (Cardiovascular Endurance) * Climbing five stories under load * Working in gear and SCBA * Performing high-intensity tasks between floorsThis develops aerobic and anaerobic capacity — critical for fireground survival and performance. 🦵 Legs (Lower-Body Strength & Power) * Stair climbing with equipment * Carrying tools or victimsStrong legs are the engine that gets firefighters where they need to go. ✊ Grip (Functional Strength & Tool Control) * Forcible entry simulations * Tool carries * Hose handlingGrip endurance is often the first thing to fail under fatigue — training it builds operationalresilience. @ct.fireacademy @atothekizzle @holmesdav520 #ctfireacademy #firerecruit #firefighterfunctionalfitness

The video demonstrates a firefighter using a Halligan bar to force open a locked emergency exit door by inserting the adze end into the frame gap and prying with leverage, a standard technique for rapid building access during rescues. Posted on March 14, 2026, it exploded to 4 million views and 13,500 likes within days, eliciting replies that mix awe at the tool's ingenuity with jokes about simpler options like turning the handle or risks to home security. Invented in 1948 by New York firefighter Adolphus Halligan, this versatile steel tool combines fork, adze, and pick ends, enabling firefighters to breach doors efficiently while minimizing structural damage, as supported by fire service training manuals.

Yesterday in Dandenong, firefighters were put at serious risk when three fire trucks failed at the one house fire. Crews arrived to find the home fully involved. As firefighters entered to search for occupants, their pump truck repeatedly went into fault mode and shut down — forcing a retreat and delaying water supply while another truck was brought in. At the same time, the Ladder Platform being set up to attack from above suffered a hydraulic failure, slowly losing pressure and dangerously tilting mid-air before going into fault mode. Then a third truck experienced an air system failure — affecting brakes, suspension and critical safety systems. Three separate failures. One fire. This is not the fire service Victorians are paying for. Firefighters and the community deserve reliable, properly funded equipment — not excuses. The Allan Government cannot continue to ignore frontline safety while trucks fail on the fireground. Victorians’ safety depends on it.

90’s trend… but this story starts long before that 🚒 Back in 1923, Gilbert’s fire service was powered by volunteers, neighbors stepping up for nearly 60 years. By 1985, the town hired two full-time firefighters contracted through Rural Metro, marking the start of a new era. After a community vote, the Gilbert Fire Department officially began service on January 1, 1993. For more than 100 years, we’ve been here for our community. A look back at where it all began. 📷
