EVPart 2 of @kahla_climbing_physio climbing “Snake Charmer” in Rocklands, South Africa. I always love weird routes… if it is something out of the ordinary, I’m automatically hooked. This route is a trade off between a pumped right hamstring from heel hooking or pumped arms from campusing. After pulling out of the roof, there’s another pumpy roof pull and tufa-like finish with big exposure!

THMeru! On May 13, 2023, Roger Schäli, Mathieu Manadier and Simon Gietl made the first ascent of the southeast face. The three gave the 800-meter alpine-style route the name Goldfish and rated it M6+ A1. Schäli and Maynadier already made an attempt four years ago together with Sean Villanueva, but had to turn back at around 6,400 meters. In 2023, the three alpinists took advantage of the long-awaited weather window and started from Basecamp Tapovan (4300 meters) directly to camp C2 at 5800 meters. Since Maynadier was struggling with health problems, he used the time to rest while Schäli and Gietl tracked part of the route and deposited climbing gear on the rock. The following day, the rope team was able to start again as a threesome. The climb was very intense and time-consuming, Roger Schäli recounts. “At times we had to clear the rock of up to half a meter of fresh snow before we could lay an intermediate belay. And there was no ice to occasionally set an ice screw.” After a restless night in the bivouac and more vertical meters, Schäli, Gitl and Maynadier made it to the ridge and from there across an ice flank to the main summit. “Big dreams need more than one attempt,” Roger Schäli wrote on Instagram after the success. About the video, @mathieumaynadier said “Climbing nice pitch like that above 6000m under great weather with a perfect rock is a chance. Those moments you understand why you come and you forget all the desagrements of expeditions!! GRCutting loose on this move having no idea what I was hooking was a full on heart in mouth situation. 100% commitment needed yesterday for this beast. Not only is it powerful moves, but I had no idea if I’d find protection or gear placements once I committed. Then the headwall also packed a serious punch!

THFirst ascent of Jannu East (7468m) by @benjaminvedrines and @nicolasjean_alpi, one of the Himalayas’ last unclimbed peaks, just went down. “Summiting Jannu East is undoubtedly the greatest achievement of my mountaineering career,” said Vedrines. “Climbing such a challenging, long and difficult face in alpine style, on a summit that had never been climbed before, had a profound effect on me. It was a dream that Nicolas and I achieved together. I feel like I drew on all my knowledge and abilities to ascend this 2,300-metre Himalayan wall. Thanks Adam @aclimbingsmith for putting up the first ascent of this, with a crazy amount of dedication and commitment to get it done ! 💪🏼
This is the lower version of Before Ava Arrives which goes slightly more left and then up avoiding the main heel hook rollover section, you use for the 8a.
In terms of a grade I think b is fair but with me and Adam having two different methods for the crux section, it’s hard to safe for certain, so hopefully time till tell.
