But why?! ⤵️ As a functional dentist, I am here to educate you on how to solve your oral health problems from a WHOLE body perspective. 🫁🧠🫀 This means throwing out bandaid solutions and getting to the root cause of things like cavities, gum inflammation, grinding, and airway problems. So why will I NEVER do these 3 things? ⤵️ 1. Sipping on anything besides water all day keeps your mouth acidic. Acid is what pulls calcium out of your teeth, leading to cavities. Give your mouth oral rest! ⏰ 2. Mouth breathing dries out the mouth leading to less saliva. Saliva is your body’s built in maintenance system for preventing cavities! It literally carries minerals back INTO your teeth. 🤯 Mouth breathing also contributes to gum disease, poor sleep, fatigue, anxiety, and systemic inflammation. 3. Baking soda is a salt, which attaches to calcium in your saliva. This prevents the calcium from getting to your teeth! How I found out ⤵️ This one mother changed my life — She brought her young child to me early in my career, desperate for help because despite doing all the right things—eating healthy, brushing and flossing regularly—her child kept getting cavities and was now losing teeth. 😭 She was super frustrated and stressed out of her mind, understandably! Biological dentistry is a niche area of wellness, but the level of knowledge, support, and treatment honestly feels like what standard care SHOULD be. Protecting the teeth with a night guard is a good thing in theory but since it doesn’t address the grinding, that damage just moves to the jaw joint—plus a night guard can make a small airway even smaller, further degrading sleep quality. Teeth grinding (bruxism) can be linked to issues like sleep-disordered breathing, stress, anxiety, and even sleep apnea. Addressing the underlying cause is crucial not just to protect your jaw joint but for your sleep quality long term.
