Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in adults in the United States younger than 50. Often, the disease advances before common symptoms are evident. What To Do: A screening colonoscopy is recommended beginning at age 45. Talk to your provider about your risk factors for colorectal cancer and about being screened for the disease. Early Detection Matters: The sooner colon cancer is diagnosed, the better the treatment outcomes.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is a good reminder to talk about something many people avoid. Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers — when caught early. A few important facts: • It is the 3rd most common cancer worldwide • It is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally • About 1 in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime • When detected early, the 5-year survival rate exceeds 90% So why do doctors still consider colonoscopy the gold standard? Because it is the only screening test that both detects AND prevents cancer. During a colonoscopy a gastroenterologist can: ✔ visualize the entire colon ✔ detect very small abnormalities ✔ remove precancerous polyps immediately before they turn into cancer No stool test or imaging test can do that. Most colorectal cancers actually begin as slow-growing polyps that develop over years. Removing them interrupts that process completely. Guidelines now recommend screening starting at age 45 for people at average risk (earlier if you have family history or symptoms). I know many people feel anxious or embarrassed about the idea of a colonoscopy. But the reality is this: the procedure itself is short, you are sedated, and it can quite literally save your life. If you’re feeling hesitant or unsure about screening, send me a DM. Sometimes a quick conversation helps remove the fear and clarify what to expect. Your gut health deserves attention — and prevention matters. Share this with someone who might be putting this test off. #ColorectalCancerAwareness #GutHealthMatters #PreventiveHealth #IBSAwareness #digestivehealth
