Low gear: imagine a 10-tooth (small) gear driving a 30-tooth (large) gear. For every full turn of the 10-tooth gear, the 30-tooth gear turns 10/30 = 1/3 of a rotation. That means output speed is one third, but torque becomes 3 times larger (ignoring losses). So low gear = slower output, more pulling power. High gear: reverse it — a 30-tooth gear drives a 10-tooth gear. For every full turn of the 30-tooth gear, the 10-tooth gear turns 30/10 = 3 rotations. Output speed is 3×, but torque is reduced to 1/3. High gear = faster output, less pulling power. Why this matters: torque × angular speed ≈ power (minus losses).
