never switched up so fast. what's your favorite cell cycle checkpoint? sources: Thom Leach Mitosis Animation, Nucleus Biology M Phase of the Cell Cycle, Nucleus Biology The Cell Cycle, VOKA 3D Anatomy & Pathology Mitosis: witness the process of cell division Barnum KJ, O'Connell MJ. Cell cycle regulation by checkpoints. Methods Mol Biol. 2014;1170:29-40. "The central machines that drive cell cycle progression are the cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). These are serine/threonine protein kinases that phosphorylate key substrates to promote DNA synthesis and mitotic progression. The catalytic subunits are in molar excess, but lack activity until bound by their cognate cyclin subunits, which are tightly regulated at both the levels of synthesis and ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis. Cyclin-binding allows inactive CDKs to adopt an active configuration akin to monomeric and active kinases. Layered on top of this regulation, CDK activity can also be negatively regulated by the binding of small inhibitory proteins, the CKIs, or by inhibitory tyrosine phosphorylation which blocks phosphate transfer to substrates... Throughout interphase, DNA damage elicits a cell cycle arrest that allows time for repair pathways to operate prior to commitment to subsequent phases of the cell cycle. The source of DNA damage may be intrinsic, such as intermediates of metabolism, attrition of telomeres, oncogene overexpression, and DNA replication errors. Alternatively, there are many extrinsic sources of DNA damage ranging from sunlight, to carcinogens, ionizing radiation or other anticancer therapeutics. While there are many lesion-specific responses for DNA repair, different lesions in genomic DNA activate common checkpoint pathways whose goal is to maintain CDKs in an inactive state until the lesion is removed." #apbiology #genetics #cellcycle #mitosis #meiosis

🧬 How Animals Look With “Down Syndrome”? 😮🐾 The truth might surprise you. Down syndrome is a human genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. Animals don’t have the same chromosome structure as humans — so they cannot technically have Down syndrome. But… some animals are born with genetic differences that can look similar. 🐶 Facial Differences Flatter faces, wider-set eyes, or smaller features can sometimes be caused by unique genetics or developmental conditions. 🐱 Developmental Delays Some animals may grow slower, learn differently, or show unusual coordination due to neurological variations. 🧬 Chromosomal Abnormalities Like humans, animals can be born with extra or missing chromosomes — but it’s not the same condition as human Down syndrome. ❤️ Unique, Not “Wrong” Many of these animals live happy, loved lives. What looks “different” is often just natural genetic diversity. The internet often labels these animals incorrectly. Science reminds us — similarity does not mean the same condition. Different doesn’t mean broken. It means rare. 💬 Did you know animals can’t actually have Down syndrome? 👉 Follow @decodingwrlds as we decode the truth behind viral myths and hidden biology. 🎥 Video Credit: DM for credits/removal to the real owner. . . . #animalfacts #genetics #scienceexplained #wildtruths #decodingwrlds

The Mystery of Hair Whorls #science #hairstyles #genetics I met these researchers at an Ig Nobel Prize event in Paris, where they won an award for their paper “enetic determinism and hemispheric influence in hair whorl formation.” They had studied babies/twins in Paris + Santiago, Chile and found some interesting patterns, but I felt like a much bigger pool of data might help point toward an answer. So l made a super short survey in my Linktree. My thought is that if enough of us fill it out, we might be able to save them the tremendous amount of time and money it would take to gather this kind of global data the traditional way.

A comprehensive appraisal of mechanism of anti-CRISPR proteins: an advanced genome editor to amend the CRISPR gene editing. Front Plant Sci. 2023 Jun 23;14:1164461. "The CRISPR defensive system consists of three fundamental stages: adaption (spacer acquisition), crRNA synthesis (expression), and target interference...CRISPR loci are clusters of regularly interspaced short repeats that can be found in the chromosomal or plasmid DNA of certain prokaryotes. The Cas gene, which encodes the nuclease protein (Cas protein) responsible for destroying or cleaving viral nucleic acid, is typically located next to the CRISPR gene (Asmamaw and Zawdie, 2021). The Cas proteins detect the foreign invading DNA, cut it up, insert it into the CRISPR spacer area, and store the fragments in the genome (adaptation). Through counter defense evolution in the microbial world, phages have evolved the inhibitors of CRISPR-Cas systems. The first known CRISPR-Cas inhibitors were found in a family of phages from the genus Pseudomonas spp. Although they had protospacer sequences that should have been targeted by this system, these phages were, nonetheless, able to infect and multiply in a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain with an active type I F CRISPR-Cas system (Bondy-Denomy et al., 2013). Phages encode anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins to evade the CRISPR-Cas immune system of their hosts (Maxwell, 2017). Acr proteins invade viral DNA into bacteria, shielding the phage’s genetic material from the CRISPR system (Semenova et al., 2011)." #microbiology #genetics #phages #crispr #biotech

These are the 5 poorest medical specialties. 🩺💸 Note that this list doesn’t include the pediatric versions of specialties because that would make it a completely pediatric list. In the 5️⃣ spot is endocrinology at $291,000 a year. Despite a lower salary, residency plus fellowship lasts 5 to 6 years after medical school. At number 4️⃣ is geriatric medicine at $289,000. It takes 4 years to become a geriatric medicine doctor after medical school. In 3️⃣ place is preventive medicine, with $282,000 a year. Residency and fellowship training lasts 3 years. In the number 2️⃣ spot is pediatrics at $260,000. Pediatric residency is 3 years. There are also several 3-year fellowship options available, but these specialists actually make less than pediatric generalists. In the number 1️⃣ spot is medical genetics and genomics at $245,000. Residency lasts 3 years. #medicalschool #medicalschoollife #medstudent #medicalstudent #residencylife #residencyprogram #residentphysician #residency #careerpath #career #medgram #specialty #viralreels #payment #paycheck #endocrinology #endocrinologist #genetics #genetic #pediatrics #pediatrician #geriatrics #preventivemedicine #preventivecare #medicalgenetics

Born in the hot springs from Thermus aquaticus, this heat-resistant legend doesn’t flinch at 95°C denaturation. While regular enzymes would denature and quit, Taq stays stable, binds primers at ~72°C, and extends DNA strands like a molecular copy machine. Thanks to Taq: • PCR became automated • DNA amplification became fast • Diagnostics, forensics & research changed forever Not perfect though 👀 it lacks proofreading (3’→5’ exonuclease activity), so it can make small mistakes. But when it comes to endurance? Absolute GOAT of molecular biology. #PCRLife #MolecularBiology #BiotechHumor #LabLife #Genetics
