VIThe Zawose Queens are a groundbreaking musical duo from Bagamoyo, Tanzania, made up of Pendo and Leah Zawose, relatives and torch bearers of one of East Africa's most illustrious musical dynasties. Their music fuses the rich, ancestral traditions of the Gogo (also called Wagogo) people with contemporary soundscapes, blending organic percussion, polyphonic vocals, and subtle electronic elements into a vibrant, modern expression of heritage. Rooted in the arid hills of the Dodoma region, Gogo music is defined by its fluid polyrhythms, intricate vocal harmonies, and distinctive instruments such as the chizeze fiddle, illimba thumb piano, and ngoma drums. These textures and grooves form the backbone of The Zawose Queens sound, which they perform in the native Kigogo language, singing of life, nature, community, and pride in their culture.
