Recycled fabrics are rare and less than 1% of clothing is being made from recycled yarn, if it is it’s most certainly old PET bottles. Over 50% of the clothes being made are polyester and ‘microplastics’ are beginning to be talked about in academic circles. Recycled plastics? At school REDcycle program is in start-up and households are collecting soft plastics to take to collection bins at Coles and Woolies. Yellow Bin, but what goes in? Paper, PET, Glass. We’ve been lulled into a false sense of greenness by assuming all our recyclable waste is being bought by China and repurposed into outdoor furniture and park benches. The Cultural vibe 10 years ago was that sustainability usually meant expensive (and organic). At tyoub, our recycled fabric for our first range was $36 per meter (made from ocean plastic and Italian) and the quote to make the swim nappy locally was $45 per pc. That’s why I sewed them myself from my studio (often taking e-com courses while sewing). Our first store was on Etsy. Reason to believe in sustainability? Because it works.
