The debate around Abraham Lincoln's assassination runs far deeper than the official narrative. Many believe the famous act wasn't just about the Civil War, but about Lincoln's move to free the country from European bankers by issuing the debt-free Greenbacks. This theory posits that his fatal act was rooted in a struggle for economic sovereignty. Whether you agree or not, this perspective profoundly challenges the way we view one of history's greatest tragedies. What are your thoughts on this? The Greenbacks, paper currency issued by the U.S. government during the Civil War, are central to a potent conspiracy theory surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. To finance the war, Lincoln and the Treasury Department created these United States Notes, which were a form of fiat money and not redeemable for gold or silver at the time, funding about 15% of the war effort. The theory posits that this move was a deliberate act by Lincoln to free the U.S. from the control of powerful European banking interests who allegedly sought to profit by lending money to the U.S. at high rates. Historically, Lincoln had always been an advocate for a strong national currency and a reliable banking system, which he believed were essential for economic opportunity. Before the Greenbacks, paper currency was primarily issued by private banks, and the federal government often relied on private loans at high interest rates. The conspiracy theory alleges that this shift toward a government-issued, debt-free currency infuriated the international banking elite, leading them to finance the assassination plot carried out by John Wilkes Booth. The widely accepted historical narrative, however, holds that Booth was a Confederate sympathizer whose primary motive was to aid the collapsing South by plunging the Union government into chaos through the simultaneous murder of the President, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward. While the historical evidence strongly ties the assassination to Confederate motivations, the powerful imagery of a President fighting powerful bankers to secure financial independence has made the Greenback conspiracy a persistent and resonant tale. . 👉Follow @money.knack for more insights like this! Abraham Lincoln faced a collapsing nation during the Civil War and a financial system dominated by European bankers. When foreign lenders offered loans with interest rates up to 30%, Lincoln refused. Instead, he issued Greenbacks—debt-free currency directly from the U.S. government, not private banks. By 1865, over $450 million in Greenbacks were circulating, stabilizing the Union economy without relying on foreign debt. Lincoln even supported expanding them after the war, but just weeks later, he was assassinated. After his death, Greenbacks were phased out, and bank-controlled currency returned. While Lincoln freed the slaves, he also took on the banking system. The outcome? Financial power shifted back to the banks, and the battle for economic control quietly ended with his life. #AbrahamLincoln #Greenbacks #FinancialHistory #BankingSystem #EconomicControl

History rarely tells the full story. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln faced a brutal problem: how to fund a nation collapsing from within. European bankers offered loans at up to 30% interest. Lincoln refused. Instead, he authorized Greenbacks — debt-free currency issued directly by the U.S. government, not private banks. By 1865, over $450 million in Greenbacks were circulating, stabilizing the Union economy without foreign debt. Lincoln openly supported expanding them after the war. Weeks later, he was assassinated. After his death, Greenbacks were slowly phased out and bank-controlled currency returned. No document proves motive — but the outcome is undeniable: financial power shifted back to banks. Lincoln freed slaves. But he also challenged the money system. And that battle quietly ended with him. What if Abraham Lincoln didn’t die because he freed the slaves... But he died because he tried to free America from the bankers. During the Civil War, Lincoln needed money. European bankers offered loans at 30%+ interest, he refused. He created “Greenbacks”, a currency issued directly by the U.S. government, free of debt. For the first time, America had money for the people, not from the banks. Europe’s bankers panicked. Secret memos warned: “If this policy continues, America will be free of our control.” Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, just days after declaring he wanted Greenbacks expanded for reconstruction of America. With Lincoln gone, Greenbacks were demonized as “unstable” and “dangerous.” The National Banking System tightened its grip. We post educational stories daily.

Abraham Lincoln pursued freedom not only from human bondage but also from financial systems that limited national independence. During the Civil War he introduced Greenbacks as government issued currency to fund the country without relying entirely on private banks and foreign debt. This move shifted power away from traditional financial institutions and placed control directly into the hands of the federal government. Greenbacks allowed the nation to function during crisis without paying interest to private lenders and demonstrated an alternative approach to national finance. After the war Lincoln was assassinated and the Greenback system was later reduced in influence as the country returned to bank centered monetary structures. Over time private banking once again became the dominant force in shaping American currency and financial policy. The story of Greenbacks remains a powerful example of how money systems shape sovereignty power and economic stability. It shows how financial decisions are never neutral and how the structure of currency can influence the direction and independence of an entire nation. The oldest U.S. $20 bill is the 1861 Demand Note, issued for the Civil War & nicknamed "greenbacks." It shows the Goddess of Liberty. The modern Andrew Jackson design debuted in 1929. Earlier issues like 1862, 1869 & 1878 Silver Certificates are highly collectible & valuable. All U.S. notes remain legal tender at face value, but rare ones fetch big premiums! #OldMoney #USCurrency #Greenbacks #Numismatics #CivilWarMoney

Some believe Lincoln wasn’t killed for freeing slaves, but for challenging bankers. ‎ ‎During the Civil War, he rejected high-interest loans and issued debt-free “Greenbacks” directly from the government. He planned to expand them after the war, but was assassinated in 1865. ‎ ‎Soon after, Greenbacks were discredited and the banking system regained control. ‎ ‎Coincidence or not, America’s financial path changed forever. ‎ ‎Follow @founders_vault for more insights on business founders #founder #abrahamlincoln

March 10th is National Paper Money Day! It is on this day in 1862 that Congress authorized the issuance of paper United States Notes, popularly referred to as “greenbacks,” declaring them as lawful currency for all payments except interest on import duties or public debt. Intended as an emergency measure, the Legal Tender Act dramatically extended federal power and changed the country’s monetary standard. We are often asked if we can print money in our print shop. For today, Howard discusses if we can print money in our shop while letterpress printing three dollar symbols. The dollars are 8 line pica in size and wood type that was made about 125 years ago. This was printed with red oil base ink using our Washington hand press. #money #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramento #museum #printingpress

When a nation controls its money, it changes history. During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln authorized the creation of Greenbacks—paper currency issued directly by the U.S. government instead of private banks. By 1865, over $450 million in these notes were circulating, helping finance the war and stabilize the Union economy without relying heavily on foreign loans. After Lincoln’s assassination, the system gradually faded and bank-controlled currency returned, leaving Greenbacks as one of the most debated monetary experiments in U.S. history. #Greenbacks #EconomicHistory #AbrahamLincoln
