Thanks to everyone who came out on a cold Sunday afternoon to share not only native plant seeds but also to share the camaraderie and community of the local native plant gardening movement. Events like these help us feel connected, and community connection is a bond that we seem to miss in modern life. More fun events to come this year so stay tuned and stay connected. This isn't for profit, it is for proliferation of that sense of connection to a community of passionate individuals.

We're excited to announce that @missouri_prairie_foundation has granted us a 2026 Native Prairie Grant to add a native healing garden! As part of our mission to grow accessible nutrition through a resilient local food system, we hope to support our community in reconnecting with the land that sustains us and exploring the many beneficial uses of plants native to the Midwest landscape. Native Plant Sale orders are due next Friday, March 6! Make sure you get your orders in to guarantee you get the plants you would like. Forms and payment can be brought in to NLDC directly, or mailed in if postmarked by March 6. Forms are available at NLDC or can be downloaded by visiting the NLDC Garden Club page at https://www.discoverycenter.net/garden-club. More information on the Native Perennial Plant Sale on June 4 will be forthcoming. The Northwoods Seed Exchange Potluck is coming up next Tuesday, March 3! Gather with others over a delicious potluck for a presentation followed by making your own plant ID stakes and sharing seeds. This event is free, but please bring a dish to share. Bringing seeds to share is not required. To register, visit https://nldc.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/nldc/event.jsp?event=51654& Stop in the Discovery Hall between the hours of 10am and 2 pm Tuesday through Saturday to see what seeds we have available in our seed corner, free for you to take and plant at home! We have more seeds than we can put out at a time, so please ask if you are looking for a specific plant and do not see it out. Don’t let them ensh*ttify the native plant movement. New shiny corporates are entering our space. But biodiversity is found at the local level and is supported by smaller players that have expertise and ethics rooted in their local habitats and species. With money to be made in our growing grassroots movement, we will see bigger businesses making all the right moves to co-opt it. They don’t always bring ecological expertise or an ethic that is responsible to what is appropriate to plant in a given ecoregion. Is it native to a particular place? Is it endangered? These are questions gardeners have not always had to ask, but if we want to support native plant conservation and rebuild habitats, they are relevant and the businesses in our movement should be able to answer them with a depth of locally rooted expertise. #nativeplants

Yesterday I went to Bellevue University for a seminar hosted by Green Bellevue about growing native shrubs here in Nebraska. The featured speaker was horticultural legend Bob Henrickson, and it was fantastic. Bob has a deep knowledge of native plants and a real passion for helping people understand how valuable they are for our landscapes and ecosystems. I’ve watched several of his webinars over the past few years, so it was especially fun to finally meet him in person. He serves as the Horticulture Program Coordinator for PlantNebraska, where he helps lead plant propagation, native plant sales, prairie education, and outreach programs. Events like this are a great reminder that learning from passionate people in our community is one of the best ways to become better gardeners. #NativePlants #NebraskaGardening #PlantNebraska #SustainableGardening #GrowNative
