MAVideo 502 HVAC Tech
Want to become an HVAC tech? It’s one of the best-paying trades you can get into without a college degree — and there’s demand everywhere.
Start by earning your high school diploma or GED. Then, enroll in a certified HVAC training program, usually 6–12 months long. After that, most people work as apprentices for 2–5 years while earning certifications like EPA 608. Some states require a license too. Once certified, you can work on residential or commercial systems, or even specialize.
Starting HVAC techs usually make $40,000–$50,000 per year. With 3–5 years of experience, you can earn $60,000–$80,000. But with specialization or your own business, the income goes way up.
Popular HVAC specializations:
• Commercial refrigeration: $75,000–$100,000+
• Data center cooling systems: Highly technical, $90,000–$110,000
• Industrial HVAC: Often unionized and over $100,000
• HVAC business owner: $150,000+ depending on service area
Add electrical, controls, or automation skills and you can dominate the market. HVAC is also considered recession-resistant, especially in areas with extreme weather.
Whether you’re fixing A/Cs in summer or installing heating in the winter, HVAC techs keep the world running — and get paid well to do it.
