Amidst the ongoing outbreak, we at @kentstudentsunion are working with @christchurchsu and @ucasu and have drafted an open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the UK, Wes Streeting. The asks from the letter: • Expansion of the local vaccination programme • Consideration of a national catch-up programme • Clearer public health guidance for students We want to ensure that no other community has to experience the fear, uncertainty and loss that our students and local communities have faced. By taking action now, there is an opportunity not only to protect those currently at risk in the local area, but safeguard communities across the country. We would also like to thank the NHS, UKHSA, The University and all support teams who have been involved.

Many students aren’t vaccinated against the MenB strain, which isn’t available on the NHS for young adults and can cost more than £200 privately. It spreads through close contact, like coughing, sneezing and kissing, putting young people at risk. The National Union of Students says the vaccine should be free for all students. The “explosive” meningitis outbreak has spread to London with a student in the capital now among a growing number of cases. In an update on Thursday, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said seven more cases had been confirmed - bringing the total so far to 27. Two university outside London - The University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University - have already confirmed to have people infected with meningitis, along with five schools in the county. The outbreak is believed to have originated at Club Chemistry nightclub in Canterbury. Two people — an 18-year-old sixth form student, Juliette Kenny, and a 21-year-old University of Kent student — have died. Hundreds of students queued at a campus sports centre on Wednesday to get vaccinated, with the university later saying 600 MenB jabs had been handed out. #breakingnews #bigpharma #meningitis
