OMAlthough I get discouraged on most days with all the budget cuts to Homeless Services & lack of resources, days like today make up for it! This guy was living in a dirt field in a tent for 5 years before he was brought into our Pallet Shelter 1-1/2 years ago. He was always quiet & very private NEVER sharing anything about his life prior to homelessness. He not once ever spoke about family. I have learned to not bring up that subject until they feel comfortable enough to do so. Usually after a few months they open up BUT this guy never did. During his lease signing the new on site case manager asked about an emergency family contact & for the first time I heard him say, " I have absolutely no family left, they have all passed on." 😭😩 He never spoke about any future plans either which had me concerned BUT during the lease signing they spoke about goals now that he's housed. He immediately said he wanted to get connected to an optometrist because he said he hasn't been able to see well. He also asked if they would help him get connected to a dentist so he can fix his teeth so he can go out & get a JOB! I couldn't believe what I was hearing after all this time. After he was moved in, I asked him why he never mentioned any of this before as he met with a case manager every week at the Pallet Shelter. He told me that he really never thought that he would get his own apartment so why even bother. He said he gave up hope of ever having a "normal" life years ago. 😭 He said now that he's housed he doesn't have to be embarrassed any longer.
