SO much of what I learnt about sewing was from actually sewing, by following sewing patterns. But, and here’s the kicker, that was by buying indie sewing patterns. Indie patterns are ones made by an individual or small business, not the ones you buy in Spotlight (like Simplicity, Vogue etc.). They, more often than not, include more detail, more information, and can actually help you learn without having to have a huge sewing knowledge base behind you. Personally, my patterns have every single word defined, and every step explained in levels of detail according to your experience level. I am regularly asked which of my patterns is a good starting point if you haven’t made clothing before. And, to be honest, they’re all suitable. BUT, if I HAD to choose, I would say The Willow Shorts. Because there’s no gathering, it’s all just straight seams and the waistband elastic brings the whole design together. I sewed hundreds of bags in 2023. I sourced all my material secondhand and connected with so many people, makers and followers. I did not take time to sew anything for myself. After watching and making notes through the year, setting aside fabric for myself and stashing ideas, I finally took time to work through some garments for my own closet. All of the material used was sourced secondhand, either from local thrifting or my fave online secondhand source @fabcyclevan. I’m committed to upcycling in all my sewing, personal or business. It does present challenges when I’m rarely using a material twice - the learning curve can be steep. But, I’m my opinion, it’s a challenge worth taking Some great free patterns shown here from @peppermintmagazine @frenchnavynow_ @tessutifabrics Indie patterns from @paper_theory @helens__closet @swimstylepatterns @lowlandkids @matchymatchysewingclub @shopwiksten @wavesandwild Most of these patterns are intended for personal use only! I won’t be making and selling these items, but wanted to share the sewing that filled my cup this season and helped push me into new skills and ideas. #sewing #handmade #indiepattern #sustainablefashion #slowfashion #sewingsustainably

Here she used the Cherry Circus Wide Stripe for a self drafted skirt with pleated stripes and she also used the Boysenberry Wide Stripe for a #florencetop by @merchantandmills and again she pleated the stripes. I looove how the pleated stripes look visually 😍 both garments look like very cool / modern / expensive boutique finds to me. If you want to copy this aesthetic, might I recommend the #paninipleatedshirt by @sewlike ? It uses pleats as the main design feature so it would be so fun paired with my wide stripes 🙌 🏷️ sewing, indie patterns, cute fabric
