On Saturday, crews from CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit assisted with a vegetation management project west of Cloverdale in Sonoma County. These projects help reduce hazardous fuels, improve defensible space, and strengthen the safety of our communities. While on site, firefighters also had the opportunity to spend time training with the Terra Torch. This important tool is used in prescribed fire and firing operations. Continued hands-on training ensures our crews stay proficient and ready to safely carry out critical fire management work. Great work by all involved in supporting proactive wildfire prevention and maintaining operational readiness. 🔥🌲🚒

Yesterday afternoon our firefighters responded to a Wildland fire on Pincushion Mountain near Millerton Lake. The first arriving engine found three separate fires along the trail in close proximity to one another. The fire was controlled at 6.5 acres thanks to the quick response of our resources, meeting the CAL FIRE mission of keeping 95% of fires 10 acres or less. CAL FIRE crews, alongside Northern Sonoma County Fire, are advancing fuels reduction efforts in the Lake Sonoma Watershed. Firefighters are piling dead and down fuels and strategically burning select live brush near road systems to build a fuel break along the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains. This work is helping to strengthen wildfire protections for Cloverdale, Geyserville and Healdsburg.

Fourteen years after the Taylor Fire, we are returning to the hills southeast of Ashland to restore the landscape on our own terms. District Ranger Alan Grubb and the Ashland Ranger District team recently completed the 828-acre Phillips Butte prescribed burn. Operations began with crews establishing "blacklines"—pre-burned buffer zones—along the unit boundaries to ensure the fire remained safely contained. Firefighters then utilized a combination of traditional hand ignitions and innovative drone technology for interior ignitions to ensure the operation was safe, fast, and efficient. This low-intensity fire removes the dead timber and ladder fuels that lead to destructive crown fires. It also mimics natural fire cycles, promoting the growth of native grasses and preventing ponderosa pines from encroaching on historical grasslands. #PrescribedFire #WildfirePrevention #CusterGallatinNationalForest #AshlandRangerDistrict
