The last time I saw and photographed Jessie Jackson was in Alabama for the historic Selma Bridge Crossing for the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday while on assignment with the @naturbanleague It was a transformative day for me to not only document but to walk freely and peacefully knowing that my footsteps were paid for in blood and sacrifice by my ancestors. Was it all a dream? Now more than ever we need a revolution! So hard to believe there are still enough people who want a world that works for everybody! When allies betray, governments become regimes and what progress made so easily slips back into an abyss of evil, hatred and selflessness! Eternal Salute to Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Today, my heart is heavy as we mourn the passing of an iconic freedom fighter, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Jesse was more than a towering figure in the Civil Rights Movement - he was my friend, my colleague, my fellow freedom fighter brother and a man I deeply admired. Having grown up in the movement, recruited into the struggle as a teenager in 1962, I had the privilege of working alongside giants. Jesse stood among them - bold, brilliant, fearless, and unwavering in his commitment to justice. I carry vivid memories of marching, organizing, strategizing, and believing together. From the movement days shaped by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through the battles for voting rights and equality, to Jesse’s historic presidential campaigns that inspired millions with the call to “Keep Hope Alive,” he never stopped fighting for the least, the left out, and the locked out. He gave voice to the voiceless. He challenged America to be better. He challenged us to be better. Even in moments of national heartbreak - after Dr. King’s assassination and during seasons of backlash and resistance — Jesse’s determination never wavered. His faith was active. His courage was contagious. His leadership was transformative. I mourn him not only with words, but with renewed commitment. The greatest tribute we can offer is to continue the work - to keep pushing, keep organizing, keep believing that justice will prevail. Though he has transitioned, his spirit remains at the center of the freedom movement. God bless the legacy of Reverend Jesse L.
