JUBorn Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in the Bronx, DJ Kool Herc is widely credited as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop.
In 1973 at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, he started isolating the “break” sections of funk records, looping them by switching between two turntables. Dancers went crazy during those breaks. That’s where the term “breakboy” later evolved into B-boy.
He didn’t just play music.

NYDJ Kool Herc (Clive Campbell) is widely recognized as the "founding father" of hip hop, initiating the culture on August 11, 1973, at a Bronx house party organized by his sister, Cindy Campbell. He revolutionized DJing by using two turntables to elongate the drum break in records, creating the beat for breakdancing. Herc was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. Cindy worked in fashion and real estate, and always managed her brother's career. They launched a campaign to make their former home at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and to name the street Hip Hop Boulevard. The Conservancy honored DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell as Living Landmarks in 2023.
