In a world that builds fast, Peter Zumthor spent 17 years on a single building. Zumthor won the Pritzker Prize in 2009 and still runs a studio of about 30 people in Haldenstein, a Swiss mountain village near the city of Chur. Before he ever drew a floor plan, he spent four years training as a cabinet maker. That background never left him. His buildings are less about form and more about what a material feels like when you touch it, or what a room sounds like when it’s empty. Before LACMA, he built a thermal bath into a hillside in the Swiss Alps using 60,000 slabs of locally quarried quartzite, a chapel in a German field whose hollow interior was formed by burning 112 tree trunks from the inside out, and a museum in Cologne built into the ruins of a Gothic church destroyed in the Second World War. In each case, he worked around what was already there. The David Geffen Galleries give LACMA 110,000 square feet of gallery space on a single elevated floor, nearly 30 feet above Wilshire Boulevard. The horizontal, single-level layout places all works on the same plane, eliminating the cultural hierarchies that most museums are organized around. You walk through it without a prescribed order.
