That’s because vowels have two types of sounds: Short sounds and Long sounds. Short vowel = regular sound apple, elephant, insect, ostrich, umbrella Long vowel = vowel says its name acorn, eagle, island, oatmeal, unicorn Understanding this difference helps children read and spell more confidently.
