WIAs a reading teacher and a mom, these are the three things I care about most before kindergarten.
1. Talk about anything and everything
Conversation builds vocabulary and language, which research shows is one of the strongest foundations for reading. It also helps kids understand and follow directions, explain their thinking, and participate in a classroom.
2. Play games
Board games are wildly underrated.
Kids are building early math thinking, practicing self regulation, learning to wait their turn, handling frustration, and using working memory to remember rules and plan moves.
3. Read every day
Reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do for early literacy.
Books grow vocabulary, knowledge about the world, and comprehension. Kids who are read to a lot walk into kindergarten with a huge language advantage.
This is what I focus on with my own kids, and it’s what I saw matter most in my classroom.
Talk.
Play.
Read.
Follow along for more ways to build a confident learner.
