ASThe design of the black hole in “Interstellar”, Gargantua, is based on rigorous scientific theory.
Filmmakers collaborated with renowned theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, who provided equations to accurately model a black hole.
A team of computer scientists then used those equations to create a new CGI rendering engine, capable of visually depicting the gravitational lensing caused by the immense gravity of the black hole.
The result was an astoundingly accurate and visually stunning representation of a spinning black hole, where the extreme gravity distorts the light from the stars behind it, creating a ring of light that appears to circle the black hole, a phenomenon known as an “Einstein ring”.
