IAIf you had told 16 year old Nicole that one she would be standing in front of the incredible panel at @tommyhilfiger Fashion Frontier Challenge on a stage with her limb difference the main talking point...she would never have believed you!
I've spoken about the extents I would go to in order to hide my arm, from refusing to leave home without long sleeves to giving myself heat stroke. I'd rather not go out than have anyone stare at my limb difference.
But my journey over the last 15 years has led me here.
I'm stood in front of THE @thomasjhilfiger , his panel including the amazing @halima , @nlvogue, and the worlds press. All while putting my limb difference and @koalaacommunity work at centre stage.
To be able to stand and advocate for the limb different community, the impact that their representation within fashion would have on younger generations and how Assistive Tech can bring so much value to the community is like I said in my pitch "an absolute dream".
This moment was not lost on me as it happened. And I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to represent a community and team of people I love all while showing my younger self she never had anything to be ashamed of.
Be under no illusion - this journey was bumpy but worth every tear, every anxiety filled trip outside, and every unsolicited question from a stranger. Every experience, good and bad, built me to this point. And there's still so far to go!
I'm excited to keep pushing and advocating - wherever it takes me! 💜🐨💙🦾

APit's limb difference awareness month, and i’m feeling so full this year 🧡
one of my favorite compliments I’ve recently gotten is “I don’t even have a limb difference or know anyone who does - but I learn so much from your page.” I never thought about these interviews or sharing stories from my life as educational, I just thought about them as sharing.
the power of community can often be thrown around, but when you are really in it — it can change lives (it’s very much changing mine).

MEHonestly most days I’m confident, just go about my day not thinking about my limb difference but when you keep being stared at constantly, it gets to you. (Although maybe it’s because I’m pretty, I know😘hehe)
Sometimes we all just need some support and a reminder that we are beautiful as we are♡ and that might not directly change the situation but a change of mindset can go a long way.
But also this is why representation is so important because the lack of representation causes lack of understanding that has a huge impact on how we are seen and treated daily!🫶
普段は自分の腕の違いなんて特に意識せずに過ごしてるけど、ずーっとジロジロ見られたりすると、やっぱり気になってくる。

誰だってたまにはサポートや、「そのままで美しい」ってリマインダーが必要🫂
それによって状況は変わらなくても、マインドセットが変わると景色も変わってくる。
そしてなにより“representation*"の大切さ！！
日常的に目にする機会が少ないと理解も広がらないし、そのせいで日常での見られ方・扱われ方に大きな影響が出ると思うから🫶

CAIt's Limb Difference Awareness month! I thought I'd join in the fun. This week I will be posting my observations of the world as a person with a limb difference.
Things I Notice As A Limb-Different Person:
1. The Alan Partridge Stare
I've lost count of the number of times I've felt like single-handed Sue, tackling the buffet like a human JCB. I love how some people openly stare, to the point of discomfort for everyone present. I've yet to find a definitive solution to this experience. If I'm in a playful mood, I'll wave my arm around more than usual when I talk, and see if their eyes/head follows. If I'm feeling insecure, I'll just feel embarrassed and a bit awkward, and want to hide my hand.
I'd love to hear your take on this, whether you are someone with, or without, a limb difference. Sometimes I feel it's my responsibility to make other people comfortable with my difference, but other times, I just can't be bothered bringing it up and talking about it.
