SPLithograph vs. Digital Print: How to Tell the Difference
If you’re an art collector, antique enthusiast, or just love fine prints, knowing how to distinguish between a lithograph and a digital print is essential. Here’s what to look for:
1️⃣ Magnification Test
🔍 Lithograph: Hand-pulled lithographs have a grainy, crayon-like texture, while offset lithographs show a fine dot pattern.
🔍 Digital Print: Inkjet prints display tiny, uniform dots, while laser prints have a powdery appearance.
2️⃣ Ink & Surface Texture
🖌️ Lithograph: Ink is absorbed slightly into the paper, creating a softer, sometimes textured look.
🖨️ Digital Print: Ink sits on the surface, often with a smooth or glossy finish, especially in heavy ink areas.
3️⃣ Paper Type & Edges
📜 Lithograph: Often on high-quality, textured paper, sometimes with uneven edges.
📄 Digital Print: Usually on modern, smooth paper unless printed on fine art paper.
4️⃣ Back of the Print
🔙 Lithograph: Hand-pulled versions may show slight ink seepage. Offset lithographs remain clean.
🔙 Digital Print: The back is usually pristine with no ink coming through.
5️⃣ Signature & Edition Marks
✍️ Lithographs: Often signed and numbered in pencil.
✍️ Digital Prints: May be signed, but edition marks are sometimes printed rather than handwritten.
When in doubt, use a magnifying glass or a magnifying app and check for ink texture and dot patterns!

Jo paid a visit to eco-friendly, expert printers @ashleyhouseprint in Exeter to see the extremely pleasing ink-mixing, cutting and printing process for a new range of Hadley paper (coming in 2026). 📖 Read all about it on Jo’s blog (via linktree in bio)
PS - for any paper geeks out there, we are printing to @fedrigoni_uk Woodstock paper which has a 80% recycled and 20% chlorine-free, FSC certified fibres.

WHSave the date! ⏰ Limited-edition print release of two lithographs by Louise Giovanelli.
Produced on the occasion of the artist’s solo show at White Cube Hong Kong these two prints published by Edition Copenhagen will be released next week (8 April 2024).
Depicting motifs that continue to fascinate the artist, ‘Prairie’ (2024) and ‘Tide’ (2024) depict lavish gold curtains and a portrait detail of highly glossed wavy hair respectively.
Inviting a slowed down process of looking, both lithographs continue the artist’s interest in light and its relationship to texture.
