Three emergency protests were called across Chicago Saturday after immigration agents shot and killed Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti that morning. Pretti’s death follows the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good, which has since sparked widespread protests and further federal escalation. The local protests began with a demonstration Saturday at Logan Square’s Centennial Monument, where residents said more needs to be done to end the immigration enforcement bringing violence to cities like Chicago and Minneapolis. “We have to be ready to put our bodies on the line,” Ald. Rossana Rodriguez (35th) said at the protest, her voice breaking as she spoke into a megaphone. “What we are seeing right now is scary, but we have to stick together. There is no other path right now. This is all there is.” Thousands gathered Sunday for a rally and march that began at Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue before pouring into the heart of Downtown. Rodriguez is among the elected officials calling for drastic action to curb Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson both called for ICE to be abolished in the wake of Pretti’s killing. “ICE must be abolished,” Johnson said on social media. “We cannot allow Trump’s militarized masked police force to continue to kill innocent people with impunity.
