The word "Mayday" comes from the French phrase "m’aider", meaning "help me."
Before "Mayday," the maritime distress signal SOS was used in Morse code (...---...), but spoken communication required a distinct and unmistakable phrase. Since then, "Mayday" has become the international standard for aviation and maritime distress situations.
When Should "Mayday" Be Used?
Pilots declare "Mayday" only in the most serious emergencies, such as:
