Imagine a wall of ice a mile thick looming over the landscape, powerful enough to reshape the earth itself. Scientists have traced microscopic geological evidence from Lake St. Gene all the way to Pennsylvania and New Jersey—proof that a massive, prehistoric event left its mark on bedrock across the continent. It’s a staggering reminder of the sheer scale of the forces that carved out the geography we walk on today. Who knew the ground beneath us held such a frozen history? #Geology #IceAge #EarthScience #NatureHistory #GeologicalWonders

The question Randall is asking about the Finger Lakes is one that cuts directly to the heart of how these valleys were formed - and the answer he arrives at overturns the conventional gradual erosion model entirely. How much time elapsed between the excavation of the bedrock basin and the first deposition of the chaotic sediment mass sitting above it? Randall’s assessment is that the answer may be essentially none. The two events were simultaneous. That simultaneity has extraordinary implications. If the excavation of the bedrock and the infill of large sediment volumes happened at the same time, the Finger Lakes were not carved by slow incremental erosion over thousands of years. They were blasted out in an instantaneous, inconceivably violent and powerful event - and immediately filled with the material that same event was carrying. The Finger Lakes landscape was not shaped by time. It was shaped by a catastrophe of such speed and force that the excavation and the burial of that excavation happened in the same geological moment. Across the world, towering rock formations with eerily human features have fueled the theory of petrified giants ancient beings supposedly turned to stone after a long-lost cataclysm. While science explains these shapes as the result of erosion and natural geological processes over millions of years, some believe they are remnants of a forgotten era, hinting at a possible “reset” of civilization. Whether illusion or hidden history, these colossal forms continue to blur the line between myth and reality, leaving many to wonder if the past is far stranger than we’ve been told. #squatchwatch #new #cryptid #mystery

Back in the 1980’s, geologists published findings that suggested that a meteorite may have struck earth right around where Kilmichael, Mississippi stands today. The evidence is deep underground, but the signs (they claim) are there.

This is your sign to look up the local geology of where you live! You might think you need to travel to faraway places to see interesting geology, but there’s most likely already something fascinating right in your back yard! ⛰️🪨 I’m particularly lucky to have grown up in New York’s Hudson Valley and to get to rediscover it through a geological lens as an adult. Sometimes things might not look like much until you dig a little deeper and realize there’s a lot more to it than you initially thought. Fun fact: my first ever geology walk I ever led was at the base of this mountain! With @dutchesslandconservancy 🤗❤️ The “something” that happened to thrust up this slice of basement rock was likely related to one of the several orogenies (mountain building events / tectonic collisions) that happened on the East Coast of North America over millions of years. It’s thought that the force of one (or multiple) of these collisions may have affected the earth’s crust over here and caused this “slice” of rock to detach and be forced up and over the younger rocks. Geologists also think that the area was probably covered with Triassic age sandstone for a while, but those were eroded away over millions of years and no longer present. What we see now is the result of erosion over millions of years which exposed the resistant slice of basement rock and turned it into this mountain in an otherwise flat-ish part of the county. ✨Sources and further reading for this video (and others) can be found at the link in my bio! 📚📖✨ #geology #geologist #hudsonvalleyny #amnh #museumofnaturalhistory

Because the granite is so durable, Mount Rushmore only erodes about 1 inch every 10,000 years. This means the faces of these four leaders will likely still be looking out over South Dakota long after we are gone.
