What Is a Wolf Worth?
The MTPR podcast “What’s a Wolf Worth” explores this very question, highlighting the ecological, economic, and symbolic value of wolves. As Yellowstone wildlife guide Cara McGary reflects:
“If we did not have grizzlies and wolves in this ecosystem, I would not have a job.”
Her words reveal a powerful truth: wolves are essential, not only to the landscapes they shape, but to the people and communities that thrive because of their presence.
Restoring the Balance
When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone in 1995, no one could have predicted just how dramatically the ecosystem would change. Without natural predators, elk had overgrazed river valleys and forests for decades. But wolves brought balance back.
Today, for the first time in over 80 years, aspen trees are returning to Yellowstone. Young saplings, once eaten to the ground, are finally growing tall. Studies show a 152-fold increase in aspen density compared to the late 1990s. With the elk population regulated, birds have returned, beavers have rebuilt dams, and rivers flow differently than they did before.
Driving Local Economies
Wolves are also a vital part of Montana’s economy. Wildlife tourism in the Greater Yellowstone region generates over $80 million each year, drawing visitors from across the globe eager to witness wolves in their natural habitat.
As McGary explains in the podcast:
“People sometimes cry when they see wolves… they’re such a symbol of the wild … that there’s still something left.”
Symbols of the Wild
Wolves embody freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the American West. To many, their presence signifies that true wildness still exists, that we have preserved something irreplaceable.
And yet, that worth is being cast aside.
Recently, the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission approved a statewide record quota of 452 wolves a 35% increase from last season’s already aggressive target. Hunters and trappers can now kill up to 15 wolves each.
By undermining the ecological, economic, and symbolic value of wolves, Montana risks not just the future of a single species, but the balance of an entire region.
