AAHere's a fun, summery DIY project that will leave you stylish and do good for the Baltic Sea! 💚 🌊
Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea causes excessive growth of filamentous green algae, which takes up space from other species growing near the shoreline. Removing the algae restores the ecosystem's balance – and this project makes it fun! 🙌
1. Collect the green algae. It grows near the shoreline and is easy to grab.
2. Rinse thoroughly to return any living creatures back to the sea. If the smell of the algae bothers you, wash the algae in a sink with soapy water.
3. Prepare the mold. You can use, e.g., bowls from your kitchen. Using plastic wrap will help with removing the hat.
4. Spread the algae evenly in the mold.
5. Add eco-friendly soap.
6. Make the algae sit by gently rubbing its surface. Pressing out excess water by hand will speed up drying.
7. Allow to dry. The hat dries slowly and will lose its green colour in the sun.
The white hats in the video are made from Ioncell fibers and other cellulose material. Made by Minerva Skyttä. The video was filmed during CHEMARTS Summer School. Thanks @aaltochemarts ⭐
The seaweed hat is includes in the upcoming 'Magnificent Materials' book. The Finnish version of the book is published in September 2024, the English version later. Go follow @mainiotmateriaalit for more!
