GRIf you run, you’re a runner. Period.
I’ve respected Mark Sisson for a long time, but the idea that you’re “not a runner” unless you break three hours in the marathon is nonsense.
This obsession in fitness with labels is weird. Running has pulled people out of obesity. It’s helped people climb out of depression. It’s given people structure, discipline, identity, and purpose. And we’re going to argue about whether they’ve earned the right to call themselves a runner?
Gatekeeping doesn’t grow the sport. It shrinks it.
And what about the sprinter? The 400 or 800 specialist? The athlete who has zero interest in 26.2 but can fly around a track? Are they not runners?
A sub-3 marathon is an impressive performance metric. It’s not a membership card.
If you lace up and run with intent — for fitness, for competition, for survival, for sanity — you’re a runner.
No arbitrary standard required.
