CAand no, I really don’t want to hear, “I thought you were talking about the autistic kind of masking!” when I’m visibly wearing a mask and we’re 6 years into a deadly disease that is disproportionately hurting marginalized communities 👋
and some benefits not listed here:
- let’s me drop my metaphorical autistic mask as I don’t have to make facial expressions!
- keeps me from smelling a lot of sensory triggers out and about!
- keeps me warm in winter months!
and a reminder that if you have a true medical exemption, that’s always valid - but all the more reason for you to be advocating for everyone to else who can mask to do so! 😷

SHRecently I’ve been thinking about people who think that a mask is a barrier to connection. I’ve heard people say “I don’t think I could develop a relationship with a person who wears a mask at work because you can’t see their face” or “It’s hard to make a connection with someone when you can’t see them smile”. Why is that? Would you say that about someone who wears a breathing machine that obstructs some of their face? Would you decide right off the bat that you couldn’t build a connection with someone who has a facial difference that prevents them from smiling? I know that kind of ableism exists, but it’s weird how comfortable people are with being open about it when talking about masks. The real barrier to connection is judgement. The real barriers that masks actually present are for the wearer. Sometimes wearing a mask for a prolonged time is uncomfortable, they are an added cost to daily life, and people treat you differently.

JEAll masks were *not* created equal, so it’s crucial to understand why some masks are more effective than others ‼️ With COVID, Flu A/B, Norovirus, Pneumonia, Strep, Tuberculosis, Measles, and potential Bird Flu cases taking over the nation, it’s imperative to find a respirator that best fits your face, and to wear it consistently 😷
I hope that anyone who watches this video makes the switch from no masks/low efficiency masks to highly protective respirators… and never looks back!
I do make a point in the video to say that wearing lesser quality masks (cloth or surgical if those are all you can access) is slightly better than not masking at all—but again, it is 🙅🏼♀️ not recommended 🙅🏼♀️. If maintaining a regular supply of respirator masks is cost prohibitive for you, try looking for a local mask bloc near you on maskbloc.org.

YV🚨 UPDATE🚨 This wasn't a year ago. She had a typo in the text of her video. The first H1N1 U.S. death with the return of bird flu was THIS year. January 6, 2025. 20 days ago. We are at the beginning of what this is going to become. And we have no help in the White House.
Watch this and heed her warning. And if you have chickens in your backyard or have a neighbor who does -- like me -- protect yourself by being mindful of dead birds or those acting weirdly. Don't touch them. Call animal control to remove them. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Protect yourself because we are no longer a part of the World Health Organization and the demon in the oval has blocked public agencies from speaking to the public about the things we need to know.

JETried and true, these are some of my favorite + some not so favorite respirators over the years. Remember every mask fits differently on different face shapes and sizes, so you may have to try a few styles before you find one with a solid seal and good fit. It’s crucial to regularly wear respirators during an ongoing pandemic, especially while the threat of another one looms. Multiple measles outbreaks have taken over the states, but the one thing that can protect you from airborne transmission until we clean air en masse? 😷. Happy masking 🎀
