What actually matters most for long-term health? Diet, sleep, or exercise? When I asked world-renowned cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra @lifestylemedicinedoctor this question on the LiveMore podcast, his answer challenged what many people assume. Looking at the global evidence, poor diet appears to contribute to more disease and premature death worldwide than physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol combined. This insight is supported by large analyses of global health data, including the Global Burden of Disease research published in The Lancet. But the conversation went deeper than that. Because when you look at what often drives poor diet in the first place, you quickly arrive at another layer of the problem. Stress. Environment. Social conditions. Research on psychosocial health and longevity has repeatedly shown that chronic stress, trauma and adverse life experiences can significantly increase long-term cardiovascular and metabolic risk. In other words, what we eat matters enormously. But so do the conditions that shape our behaviour. Interestingly, this is something that came up again earlier this week when I recorded another LiveMore podcast episode with Joey, where we spoke openly about mental health, stress resilience and suicide prevention. The more you study longevity and peak human performance, the more one thing becomes clear. Heart health and mental health are deeply connected.
