MAForcing a young adult to marry somebody from back home who they have nothing in common with sounds like a prison sentence. Yet it was, and still is, the reality for many Muslims, across both men and women.
Although this was not our story, a significant number of people we have business mentored over the years have lived this exact experience. Young men and women pushed into nikah before they were ready, before attraction, compatibility, or real choice were ever centred, often because of culture, pressure, and the need to keep everyone else happy.
What follows is painfully familiar. Two people living under the same roof who barely know each other. Resentment quietly building. Emotional shutdown just to cope. Some living completely separate lives while remaining married on paper.
➡️ From the outside, everything looks fine. Married. Settled. Respectable.
➡️ Inside it feels lonely. Trapped. Like living with a stranger you were told would eventually feel like home.
Advice:
✅ For young people: Islam values consent, intention, and choosing with clarity. It is crucial that you learn your rights, both Islamically and legally. Do not fall for manipulation or gaslighting from parents who prioritise reputation, community pressure, or “honour back home” over what Islam actually teaches. Use simple, respectful language, but remember this principle clearly. There is no obedience in disobedience to Allah.
👀 For parents: Separate culture from deen, and pressure from guidance. Ask yourself honestly, do you want to subject your child to a potentially tormented existence, or do you want to honour the Sunnah properly. Your children have rights over you just as you have rights over them. Change begins with you. Your children have free will.
This issue resolves through prioritising Allah and returning to the teachings of our beautiful faith.
When done correctly, nikah becomes a place of mercy, safety, and genuine companionship, and that is exactly what it was designed to be. 💕
