MENFPA & Fire Safety Standards in Oil & Gas Engineering Insights |
Codes & Standards Series
Fire safety in oil & gas is not about reacting to emergencies
it's about designing systems that prevent escalation before it happens.
That's where NFPA standards come in.
In a typical oil & gas facility, fire protection is built as an integrated system, not isolated equipment:
NFPA 30 - Controls fire risks in flammable & combustible liquid storage tanks
NFPA 58 - Governs LPG storage, handling, separation distances & emergency protection
NFPA 11- Defines foam systems for tank fires and spill fires
NFPA 13- Covers automatic sprinkler systems for buildings and process areas
NFPA 15 - Protects pressure vessels and equipment using fixed water spray
NFPA 20/24 - Form the backbone: fire pumps and underground firewater networks
Key Insight:
Fire protection works only when all these standards are coordinated water supply, foam, sprinklers, cooling, and emergency response must function as one system.
In oil & gas, good engineering doesn't fight fires it prevents disasters.
