Flash floods and landslides across Sumatra have left a trail of destruction, entire villages submerged, thousands dead or missing, and hundreds of thousands struggling without power, food, or clean water. Videos of people begging for rescue have dominated social media, but the national disaster agency, BNPB, has held back from declaring it a national disaster, initially suggesting the situation was being exaggerated online.
Public anger surged after BNPB later admitted they “didn’t expect it to be this severe,” raising questions about how such a massive catastrophe slipped past official awareness. As the death toll climbs and communities remain isolated, frustration grows over whether the government’s response is moving fast enough for a disaster of this scale.
